Still Picture is Transformed Into a Never-ending Show
It sounds like science fiction but it’s real!
It’s pretty difficult to come across a true innovation in visual arts, to discover something so novel as to leave a lasting impression. A bit that stands out from everything else the mankind has already produced over the centuries. Difficult, but not impossible!
Visualize a painting on the wall, an intriguing abstract. You glance at it and turn away. The next time you look at it, you notice the painting has completely changed. You begin staring at it and discover that the painting is changing all the time. Images slowly morph, as do colors, shapes and even brush strokes. It’s a living picture that is in the state of perpetual transformation. The pace of transformation is soothing, the colors are vibrant and shapes conjure up images that you can’t quite resolve. The living picture draws you in, transfixes you, and when you break away from the show, you feel refreshed and re-energized.
It would be discounted as a figment of wild imagination or science fiction. Those skeptics are in for a surprise, because such a painting does exist. A Canadian artist named San Base creates live paintings, making his own dreams come true. He has pioneered the Dynamic Painting technology - a revolutionary painting presentation method that breathes a life into previously static images.
The Dynamic Painting can be considered a generative art - an art that has been generated algorithmically by a computer system. The artist creates the basic idea of the picture (plot, aesthetics), basic colors, basic principles of their development. Then a computer works on the picture's individuality, adding more variations and fluctuations to the basic elements and letting them develop with time. Images replace each other hour-by-hour, day-by-day, and month-by-month. The painting is always in the state of perpetual transformation. It never repeats itself. Every time a new image is created, there is an opportunity for a peaceful receptivity, and then the work disappears forever. The picture is living its own life with objects moving and transforming but still following the original artist's concept. The traditional painting has acquired the dimension of time. In fact it is just a regular contemporary art picture while also being a never-ending show.
The dynamic painting acts upon the viewer by means of inducing associations, i.e. the viewer interprets the picture's subject on his own. The picture is only an incentive to that. Therefore different people apprehend the same image differently. A perception of a picture depends very much on the emotional condition of the viewer. Since the image changes all the time, the viewer's imagination is much more active than while watching conventional static art.
Since the images of a dynamic painting are produced by a computer, one might question the artist’s involvement in the process. So who in the end creates the painting an artist or a computer? This is what San Base has to say about it:
“Of course an artist creates the painting. A computer can’t create anything on its own and it doesn’t embody any creativity. It’s just a tool that works according to a predefined algorithm. The dynamic painting could have many varying parameters that the computer can change to create new instances of a painting, however it can’t create anything on its own.”
It is no secret that many artists who have found a successful style and form have exploited it for many years by painting similar pictures without much creativity. A dynamic painting can do the same thing at much higher speed, generating many paintings per minute instead of the 2-3 paintings per week that most conventional artists can produce. The real challenge is coming up with an original idea for a dynamic painting as well as producing it; after that, a computer can mechanically generate variations. The computer, as a tool, frees up the artist’s time to do what as an artist does best: create and innovate.
I’m confident that dynamic paintings will be widespread in the near future. Today the only obstacle is the equipment cost. A good quality high definition flat display along with a computer could cost 2-3 thousands of dollars. But as we all know, electronic goods are getting better all the time while its price keeps on dropping. With the advent of large and inexpensive flat screens, this new movement in art will become extremely popular. The benefits of this genre are obvious: an endless supply of unprecedented and unpredictable paintings in the place of one static image. The technique guarantees always a new juxtaposition of colors and shapes in an abstract picture. On a landscape there would be moving clouds, darting birds, and trees swaying in the wind. And seasons, the painting would change with seasons. Unlike a movie, the painting never ends and never repeats itself. It has a life of its own. Science fiction? Not at all, this is the very near future.
