How do you make the transition to a new home easier for cats?
I have 2 indoor cats that have spent their entire life in our apartment (approx. 15 years). We finally got news that we were approved for a new home, but I am worried about how they will adjust. Any suggestions? Thanks!
I have moved a few times with my cats.
I let them stay at the old place until everything is set at the new place. Make sure litter boxes are in th places you will keep them.
When I bring the cats into the new house, I keep them in their carriers until we are at the litter box. I let them out near the litter box (which still as some of their old, used litter in it so that they know it is theirs.)
This way, their main point of reference is the liter box. : )
If you do try the Feliway product, I recommend only the plug-in - not the spray.
Some cats like to explore the entire house right off the bat, others like to explore just a bit at a time. If the cats seem scared of exploring the house, keep them in smaller rooms until they feel comfortable. Then let them out when you can be with them when they explore.
If your cats are fine with exploring, let them!
