What length of steel cable will break at its anchor point when suspended vertically.?
I have a theoretical suspension point above ground and I want to establish the length of steel cable I could hang vertically to a point where the steel cable would break under stress of its own weight at the anchor point. How long would the suspended steel cable be? I've heard there's a mine in Africa that is 2 miles deep and the workers lift runs to the bottom, so that cable is over 2 miles long and the lift cable doesn't break.
The example of the mine cable in Africa does have some auxiliary forces applied to it, but I was more of the point under stress of its own weight, and the theoretical suspension point is unbreakable.

well you would need to know at what force the anchor point breaks, find that and then find a known mass/legnth of steel cable. if you know the mass per legnth then multiply that times the acceleration due to gravity and solve for the breaking point of the anchor to get the legnth needed. this is only for breaking under its own weight. the mine in africa would have other forces involved
