Wat's the best way to make shelves for an alcove ?
I have some beautiful reclaimed oak floorboards that I'm going to fit together and machine the edges off, but how do I fit them into the alcoves and still look good ? I think the best way is to fit 2 inch x 1 inch batten around the alcove and sit the boards on the top. How safe will this be and how strong the final result ?
Will be a good result with 2 X1 batten, remember you will need 2 1/2 inch 10 g screws (1 inch for the batten, half inch for the plaster, 1 inch for the wall)
When you have the battens in place, create a template for the ends to give a good fit. Easy way for this, get a piece of hardboard, lay it on battens, (one end only) then using scrap of 2X1 agasinst wall, mark your wall line for one side. Repeat for the other side, then measure your back distance on the wall.cut your template, and away you go....

center support for 5' oak shelf?
Would I need a center support to prevent sagging. Using 3/4" oak, 16" deep, 5 ' long. Will either use router to make daddo joint or screw shelves in place thru sides of bookcase. Possibly some L brackets for support also. Will need to support some stereo components, nothing heavier than that.

Over time you will see some sag, even with 4/4 oak. With the expense of using hardwood like this I would add some supports. If there is a back on the unit, why not use glue and/or biscuit joint it? You could also put a small rail underneath the shelf along the front edge which would also help. You could route the edge with a slight roundover and it would look very nice. Best of luck.
