Residential Wallcoverings – Pre-Pasted Wallcoverings
When purchasing wallcoverings, they come designated as pre-pasted wallcoverings and NOT. Just what does pre-pasted wallcovering mean? It means that the manufacturer of that wallcovering you have chosen had paste applied to the non-decorative side of the wallcovering to assist you in hanging the wallcovering.
Now, the paper is not sticky until it comes in contact with water. Typically the instructions will tell you to measure the amount of paper you need, add extra inches and then loosely roll the non-decorative side facing the wall and the decorative side facing out. The paper will need to be immersed in lukewarm water for the amount of time listed on the instructions that come with the roll. It is important to follow these directions exactly.
Most directions talk about using a water tray. This little gadget is about 30” in width and about 6 “ deep and wide. Do you see something wrong with trying to use this itty bitty container to put in enough wallcovering to cover a 10' wall? I usually make a large mess using these and typically spill one or two trays on the floor. Now, after doing a couple of strips of wallpaper, this water will turn creamy and sludgy from the excess paste that has slid into the water tray.
I much prefer using the bathtub. I only fill it a quarter full with lukewarm water. I roll the wallcovering inside out, lay it in the water and just before I pull it out, I gently “swish” (yes, this is a technical term) the wallcovering sideways in the tub to insure all the adhesive is wet. If the adhesive is not wet in areas, you will have to add water to the dry areas.
Let me paint a picture for you. You have lots of wet, sticky wallpaper paste and now you have two areas the size of a baby's fist still dry. You can use a sponge, your hand, whatever to wet these areas. This is essential to do, as the wallcovering will not stick to the wall if dry.
Did I mention you are straddling wet sticky paper as you try to do this? The water in the tub or water tray is only good for 5-6 strips of wallcovering before you will have to change the water. So I find it is so much easier to just pull the plug rather than move a tray full of sludgy gooey water to the disposal area without sloshing it all over the in-between areas. But hey, maybe that is just me.
